The first of many new drugs to hit Ireland’s treatment system are now available for the first time. The latest is a new heartburn medicine, Nexium, which comes in two strengths: 20mg and 40mg. This week’s announcement by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has confirmed that Nexium 20mg is the preferred choice for treating heartburn for up to three days. This is the same medication used for GERD treatment in the UK.

Nexium was previously the most commonly prescribed treatment for heartburn. However, it has been available for the last four years and has been shown to be effective for people with GERD and heartburn, as well as non-smokers.

“It’s important to remember that Nexium is a prescription medication and should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” says Mark Lough, PharmD, a pharmacist in Dublin. “It’s important to have a conversation with your GP about how you should take Nexium.”

Nexium 20mg and 40mg are available in strengths of 20mg, 40mg and 80mg. The medication is prescribed in three strengths: 20mg, 40mg and 80mg.

A pack of 40mg Nexium 20mg and 40mg is available for the first time in Ireland.

“It is important to remember that Nexium is a prescription medication and should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” says Mark Lough, PharmD, a pharmacist in Dublin.

It is important to note that Nexium should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional and is not a cure for any underlying health conditions that may be contributing to the symptoms of GERD.

“The treatment should be initiated at the earliest sign of any symptoms of heartburn, and should only be undertaken in a private, non-medically licensed, non-Hospital setting,” says Lough. “It’s important to have a discussion with your GP about the risks and benefits of Nexium.”

Nexium 20mg is available in 40mg strengths, while 40mg and 80mg are available in a pack of 40mg. Both of these strengths are prescribed for adults who have heartburn, and they should be taken as directed. If heartburn is not controlled, the medication may be combined with a medication to treat acid reflux or gastric ulcers.

“The 40mg strength should be taken every day, and the 80mg strength should be taken once each day,” says Lough. “For people with acid reflux, the 40mg strength may be used at night to reduce acid production and help heal the stomach.”

The MHRA has issued a statement saying that Nexium should only be taken if a doctor has advice from their specialist about the specific circumstances under which it is prescribed and recommended for use. “This medication is not suitable for use in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal problems.”

The MHRA has issued a statement saying that the product should be used only under the guidance of a healthcare professional, and that it is not indicated for people with a history of heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Nexium is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

Nexium control capsules contain esomeprazole; the active ingredient in both are esomeprazole. The capsules are specially formulated for children to control the gastro-intestinal symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. They are especially recommended for children who have frequent heartburn and indigestion. Esomeprazole belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Ingredients

Each capsule contains esomeprazole 20mg.

How to Use

  • Swallow the capsule with a glass of water, with or without food.
  • Before eating, do not open the capsule, as this may reduce the amount of medicine your child is absorbed into the food. However, the medicine should be taken at least one hour before or 2 hours after eating to reduce the chance of the medicine interacting with the food and the child’s reaction to it.

If your child has a stomach ulcer, drink a small amount of stomach acid in the past 4 hours, but do not eat anything that contains stomach acid. If they have had a ulcer for 4 days, they may absorb a small amount of stomach acid on a short term basis. Do not take more or less of it. If the ulcer has healed after 4 days, continue to eat. Do not take a dose above the normal dose unless advised to by a doctor. Swallow the capsule whole, without breaking or chewing. To prevent the release of acid into the child’s stomach, they can take a lower dose or a combination of the two. The dose that the child is best for is 1 capsule with food and 2 capsules with water.

It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions regarding the dosage and administration of Nexium control capsules. Follow the doctor’s instructions carefully regarding the amount of medicine the child should take. Do not give the Nexium control capsules to a child under the age of 6 years unless advised by a doctor to by the use of a gastric band.
